The Struggle

                Romans 7: 14-20 States “

14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[c] For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20

Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

What Paul is describing here is the very conflict that each person that has walked this earth has experienced. The Struggle of doing what we KNOW is right and what we KNOW is wrong. Often these decisions are best made with the help of hindsight and/or an outsider’s perspective. Ultimately, we have to make these decisions. We are flawed/emotional/weak/sinful by nature to our core. How does God expect us to get it 100% correct????????? T

The above question appears to be unfair and our God is a fair/just God. So, his policies are not full of entrapment but rather a desire for us to make the right decisions but the freedom to choose poorly. We can get educated in his Word, we can receive direct advice from God himself on his 24hr hotline via prayer and being plugged into a great church like FOTH will give you a strong support team there to hold you up in times of deep struggle.

We never outgrow making mistakes in life. An 8 year old and an 80 year old both can state unequivocally that they’ve made a mistake in judgement recently. The 8 year old may have not followed their parent’s instructions to not touch the iron while it was hot.  While the 80 year old may have not followed the Doctor’s orders and not taken it easy for a few more days. Both decisions are simple in retrospect and we all KNOW what the right answer is on this side of that decision.

But, this is for those in the midst of the TOUGH DECISION. Do I get a divorce/stay with this person, do I leave this job for another, do I continue to date someone that is hindering my walk with God or not, do I go to that party with those people knowing that this could affect my relationship, do I watch this show or not, do I text this person knowing my spouse does not approve of them, do I have next drink beyond my limit, do I keep myself in the midst of comfort even though that comfort betrays me or do I take a step into the unknown in hopes that it is better than what I have now.

To struggle is human, to make mistakes is human and to fall flat on your face is human. We serve a God that restores, rebuilds and is all about reconciling with US who have strayed away/chose poorly. Jesus Christ died for all of our struggles, pains and MISTAKES. There is not a mistake he hasn’t heard of nor knows how to handle. All that he wants is us to give him our struggles, our faults and fears. He is not a God of assigning Guilt but making us WHOLE.

If you are struggling with something today with a sin, a decision or a struggle of some kind………GIVE IT TO GOD! He does not necessarily want us to avoid struggles but to navigate through them. Embrace the struggles, embrace giving them to God and ultimately one will embrace Victory. My hope and Prayer today is that when we Struggle, we give it all to him. Yesterday may have defeated us but today, we stand Victorious due to OUR GOD.
